Social Ecology Honors Seminar Application Deadline - Extended

The Social Ecology Honors Program is a three-quarter long sequence for Social Ecology seniors interested in conducting thesis projects. The Social Ecology Honors Seminar provides a special opportunity to work closely with not just one, but two professors, and with a small group of elite students. Each student in the seminar works closely with a faculty mentor on an individualized research topic. Also, all the students in the seminar meet to discuss common issues regarding research design, execution, and presentation.

The seminar is open to Social Ecology students with a 3.2 UCI GPA and a 3.5 GPA in upper-level Social Ecology major courses (minimum of 4 such courses) at the end of Summer Session II of their junior year.

The deadline to apply has been extended to Thursday, July 5th by
5 p.m. in the Social Ecology Student Services Office. Students need to submit a brief, one-page research proposal, a letter of support from a Social Ecology faculty member who agrees to serve as a mentor, and an official UCI transcript. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this process, contact Professor Kristen Day, the Honors Faculty Coordinator, at kday@uci.edu.

New B.S. in Business Information Management

The B.S. in Business Information Management major (BIM, jointly offered by the Bren School of ICS and the Paul Merage School of Business) has now been formally approved and will begin accepting new freshmen in Fall 2008, and new transfers in Fall 2009. The Bren School of ICS Student Affairs Office will manage all administrative and advising functions for the Pre-Major and BIM major.

New freshmen starting Fall 2007 and current students who have earned fewer than 60 units (excluding AP or IB exam units) as of June 30, 2007 interested in pursuing this major will be able to officially petition to change majors in Fall 2008. However, students are encouraged to begin preparing for that change as early as Fall 2007.

New incoming freshmen or current students can effectively be admitted as pre-BIM students by declaring as ICS Undeclared and following the sample first year BIM program outlined in the 2007-08 General Catalogue. Petitioning from ICS Undeclared is not a requirement but if space is limited, priority may be given to those students. Students interested in declaring the BIM major should meet with a counselor in the ICS Student Affairs Office to discuss their academic plan ensuring timely progress within the BIM major. ICS academic counselors can be reached at ucounsel@uci.edu or (949) 824-5156.

Bachelor of Science in Business Information Management Catalogue Description:

As the business environment becomes increasingly global and information-centric, the need has increased for graduates who understand and can use technology that gathers and provides information, who are able to distill and recognize patterns in that information, and who can apply those analyses to achieve business objectives.

The undergraduate Business Information Management major is an interdisciplinary degree program between the Bren School and The Paul Merage School of Business. It seeks to educate students to understand and then apply the theories and concepts of a broad, integrated curriculum covering computing, informatics, business fundamentals and analytical decision-making. The major prepares students for a wide variety of careers and life experiences. Business Information Management majors can pursue careers in the for profit and not-for-profit sectors or can proceed to graduate school in several disciplines, including information systems, computing, economics, business and law.

The curriculum is presented across three general academic areas: Computing (computer science, informatics and software); Business Foundations (accounting, finance, marketing, strategy and operations); and Analytical Methods (mathematics, statistics, economics, management science and decision analysis). The fundamentals of information and computer science, including the rudiments of software design and construction with an emphasis on data management, provide the foundation for understanding, describing, and evaluating the technology through which most business information is gathered and presented. The business fundamentals, covering all the functional areas in the business school, provide a background and context in which information and its analysis will be applied.
